How Are You Starting Your Morning?
So many of us mindlessly hit the alarm off in the morning and either go back to sleep or roll out of bed stumbling into the kitchen for our first cup of coffee. We rarely think about the fact that we just woke up. We’re alive, breathing and able to live another day! We get so caught up in the busyness and stress of our lives…we forget to not only be grateful period but we forget to be grateful for the biggest gift of all…our breath. And that fact that we’re alive!
A few weeks ago I realized I was guilty of this. And boy did that carry some shame and guilt. I’m a yoga instructor and energy healer…I mean come on! Of all humans, I should be able to be conscious of this in every moment. But I quickly let that shish go when I heard the whisper of amazing words and wisdom from Maya Angelou “…when you know better you do better.” Boom. That was it for me. I realized my downfall and then, I change it.
From that day on I started a morning ritual. Most of it stays the same but we’re dynamic beings so I sometimes add or exchange pieces of the ritual depending on my ‘season’ (season is a nicer way of saying mood…😊). Remember to honor your soul and come up with a morning ritual routine that truly resonates with you. Something that sings to your soul. But here is my current morning ritual;
SACRED ALTAR: I created a sacred space for me to go to in the morning. This space has a crystal bowl, a white candle, framed artwork with a positive affirmation, and a morning prayer I recite each morning.
SMILE: As soon as my alarm goes off, I intentionally smile to ensure I start my day off with positive vibes.
GRATITUDE JOURNAL: I then grab my pen and gratitude journal off my nightstand and write. Usually through sleepy eyes still so my writing is barely legible. But that’s ok! Some mornings I write one thing “breath” and other morning I fill the page. But I write something/s I am grateful for before my feet hit the floor.
MORNING PRAYER: I recite a profound heart-centering prayer by Marianne Williamson from her book Illuminata A Return To Prayer. This prayer strongly resonates with me and immediately grounds and connects me to my soul and a higher power.
CANDLE: I have a white candle that I reiki charged. I light the candle asking that the energy and intention of the words I just spoke from my prayer are carried away into the Universe through its sacred smoke.
This whole process takes less than 5 minutes and is worth every second. We all have 5 minutes to spare for something as divine as this.

In Love & Gratitude,
Are you aware of your feet?👣
When you walk...do you feel them?👣
So often we take them for granted.👣
Our feet are humble servants to the physical body and a guide to spiritual awareness.👣
They are conduits of divine energy.👣
The next time you're walking...bring your awareness out of the mind and into your feet.👣
When you do you feel grounded.👣
When you do...you are in the present moment.👣
When your awareness lies in your feet...you display humility.👣

How do you get past pain? Hurt? Betrayal?
You sit with it.
You scream at it through streams of tears.
You move through it.
You breathe into it.
You breathe through it.
And then…you have two choices. You either wear it like a badge allowing it to dim your light.
Or you surrender to it…using it as a catalyst for spiritual growth.
Transforming your pain into miraculous growth.
Surrender is easier said than done but I promise you…it is worth every molecule of energy.
Surrender doesn’t mean giving up or accepting defeat and pain.
Surrender means to stop fighting, to stop resisting what is. To accept it. And then, like an ingredient in a recipe, to use it in the divine expressive creation of your soul.
Use your pain, your life experience…for miracles. Transform it into peace, joy, and freedom.
You didn’t choose your painful experience…but you can choose what you do with it.
So what will you choose?
Will you create more pain?
Or will you create freedom, peace, and joy?
In Love & Gratitude,
Our breath is the expression of prana…life force.
As Dr. Deepak Chopra so eloquently said”…you aren’t breathing…you are being breathed”.
Our breath IS life!
It is the only autonomic system that we have control over.
Have you ever paused to ask yourself why? Why do we have control over our breath?
As humans, we take our breath for granted. We don’t even notice our breath let alone have the awareness to consciously control it. We often breathe shallow, in our chest, or even worse…we’ll hold it many times throughout the day without even realizing it.
Why can we control our breath? Besides holding our breath in order not to drown…what’s the purpose of being able to manipulate our breath?
As I move through my soul journey, this is what I’ve come to so far.
Our breath not only keeps us alive but it REMINDS us that WE ARE ALIVE!
It is an expression of our spirit.
It is a tool to be used for healing.
We can detoxify the body by using our breath.
We can manipulate our cardiovascular system by using our breath.
We bring the central nervous system into balance and peace by using our breath.
And our breath centers us…grounds us in a place of knowing.
It reminds us…that we are not our bodies but that we are divine spirits having a human experience.
Our breath connects us to all that is and all there ever will be.
Our breath connects us to our SOUL.
So, how will you use your sacred breath today?
In Love & Gratitude,
By now we all feel pretty well versed on how stress is a killer and a systemic ager yet we don’t seem to be doing anything about it. It’s almost like we don’t believe it. The average human has 50+ stress responses per day! And that number more than doubles in those that struggle with anxiety or depression! And, unlike in the cave man days, a stress-response is no longer when you’re running for your life because a tiger is chasing you. Nope. Now our stress-responses are for things like…waiting at a red light too long, running late for work, losing your phone for 30 seconds, out of your favorite dark chocolate. Wait…that last one might just be a me thing. But you get the point. We allow ourselves to feel stress for so many things now. I could bore you with a scientific lecture on how stress shortens our telomeres and bathes our cells in these stressor hormones every single time we feel stressed…but I won’t. Just trust me (and the scientists) that a chronic state of stress wreaks havoc on our body, mind, and spirit!
I don’t know about you, but the fact alone that stress is proven to cause crepey skin and crow’s feet is enough for me to want to find a mountain top somewhere and live like a monk.
I’m into solving problems not just talking about them so let’s talk about how we can reduce our stress and stave off a few wrinkles (and of course be healthier). Stress-reducing techniques are limitless and what works for one may not work for another. But…I am big on using mantras and affirmations. Mantras and affirmations have changed my life on more than one occasion. They immediately allow you to connect to your soul and tap into the Universal energy. Incredibly powerful! Here’s the mantra I use in the heat of a stressful situation;
Om Shanti Hum
Om is the sacred sound of the Universe…BOOM immediate grounding and connection
Shanti is the sound for peace
Hum is confirmation that this is your true self
OM SHANTI HUM
I chant this several times until I feel a vibrational shift. It’s a beautiful thing!
Give it a try and tell me what you think! Did it help you? What techniques do you use to reduce stress in your life?
In Love & Gratitude,
How many times have you felt this way? During a crisis, or maybe a time when you only had two cents to your name, you’ve been sick for weeks, just lost your job, maybe a betrayal by one of your closest friends, whatever it may be…amid the chaos…someone says something like “This too shall pass” or “Everything happens for a reason”. And in that moment, you want to scream...”Now is not the time to lecture me with some spiritual crap!”. There have been a few moments I’ve wanted to drop a few choice words that may…or may not have…include an F bomb at some well-intended soul (I didn’t though!). We’ve all felt it. No matter how spiritually evolved we are, we are human! We aren’t perfect. And that means that sometimes at our lowest point we don’t want to ‘think positive’ or ‘be positive’. We just want to feel pissed off, feel sad, or feel frustrated. It’s ok to allow those emotions for moment. Never stifle or resist your emotions. Feel them! The important thing is to not linger here. Don’t dwell in the home of anger or despair. Pass through it like a visitor. Sometimes those intense emotions are a catalyst for change. So move through but keep moving. It is in these moments that our highest potential for spiritual growth exists.
You have to see darkness in order to see the light. As humans, we must feel sadness, anger, or despair in order to appreciate joy, peace, and happiness. Those emotions that are heavy are here for us to learn and grow from. Just like a beautiful perennial flower lays dormant in darkness only to blossom and flourish for a new season. We are meant to grow and flourish after a period of darkness. It’s in our nature! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying we’re supposed to struggle as human beings. Not at all! Quite the opposite. But life is not perfect and it is inevitable that over the course of a lifetime, you will have life experiences that you feel are heavy and dark. What’s important is what you choose to do with those experiences. Notice I said choose. We have a choice in every thought, emotion, feeling, and action. So, when you’re in the middle of an experience that has you feeling angry, lost, or sad…feel it. But just for a moment. And then make the choice to blossom from the wound you once bled from. There is nothing more empowering than that!
With Love & Gratitude,
Let me get on my soapbox for just a moment please. It drives me pazzo when I hear people make statements like...”I can’t do yoga. I don’t bend like that” or “I don’t want to turn into some whoohoo soy matcha green tea latte drinking hippie” or my personal fave…”I tried it. Wasn’t for me.” Are you kidding me?! The ones that say the latter are the ones that need the practice of yoga the most! But let me tackle these most common stereotypes one a time.
The “I don’t bend like that” group
This is the one actually makes me sad. Yoga is not about how flexible or strong you are. It’s not about your physical attributes or accomplishments. If you achieve epic handstands and a Gumby body, great! If that’s your goal. But yoga is not about that! It’s about the union of your mind, body, and spirit. It’s a spiritual practice that incorporates the body. Strength and flexibility are just a beautiful harmonizing by-product of your yoga practice. To these people, I always say….”If you can breathe…you can practice yoga!”
Next, to the “I don’t want to turn into some whoohoo soy matcha green tea latte drinking hippie” group
Umm...first of all, don’t knock a soy matcha green tea latte until you try one (they’re delish) 😊! Next, yoga doesn’t turn you into something or make you somebody. Yoga is your guide back to your authentic nature. Your true self. Your soul! And who doesn’t want that?! Now, I will say this, when you practice yoga regularly it does awaken you in many ways and in doing so you begin value and respect your body temple. You realize that all we have is our health and our breath. This awakening is a catalyst for many to release old habits that are harming their emotional and physical bodies. Things like eating poorly, smoking, addicted to drama, etc. You grow such a deep appreciation for your body, health, and energy that you are inspired to take excellent care of your body temple. So, you may replace a 24oz five days’ worth of sugar coffee drink for a soy matcha green tea latte. And if you do…I say welcome home!
Finally, the” I tried it. Wasn’t for me” group
So, this group hits a little close to my heart because I was one of them. Yep! Now, that was a very long time ago but it’s true, I was. I was too addicted to the burn, the sweat, and pushing my body that the idea of slowing down, witnessing my breath, and feeling was almost painful. But this is exactly why I say this group needs the practice of yoga the most. I know from experience. This is usually the personality type that is addicted to always ‘doing’, has no time for yoga let alone to notice they are breathing, and most of the time…are those who have some undigested emotions or life experiences they’re holding on to. Too deep and painful of feelings to process that the idea of allowing themselves to slow down and feel is almost too much to bear. It’s scary for them! This is the type of soul that, as a yoga instructor, I approach with gentleness and compassion. Otherwise, their go-getter perfectionist type-A personality type may overtake them and they’ll find a reason to give up on their yoga journey.
Of course, there are other reasons people have besides the three listed above to turn away from a yoga practice. But what’s important to take away is that these are all judgments of the mind and the ego. They are not reality. We need to match judgement with love. Match fear with freedom. We need to inspire each other with actions and by sharing our own personal journeys. Yoga truly is a guide and a journey back home to your soul. It doesn’t matter how messy the journey is. The only thing that matters is that you embark on your yoga journey and never give up.
My first sacred smudge stick! So...I sage every weekend in my home. Not only my home but my people and pups living in it! I literally can feel the energy shift and lighten as I walk through my home with my fave sage stick and gorgeous feather. I have a certain ceremonial ritual I do and blessing I say and sometimes it changes depending on the room I'm in.
Anyway, I've felt the calling to make my own lately using specific herbs and flowers and I finally did! This beauty is hanging to dry and I cannot wait to use it in a couple weeks when she's ready. I'll keep you all posted on how the scent is once burned but as for right now...it's divine!
Do you smudge? What is your fave ritual you do? Share your thoughts and ideas with us!
As I sat in my backyard this morning sipping my cup of coffee looking up at the crystal blue sky, there were several large birds flying overhead. One was on a mission whose path just happen to go directly over my home while a few others lingered and played before continuing on their journey. As I heard the whispering of the large redwood trees swaying and felt the cool morning air on my skin, I had a moment of inspiration (in-spirit knowing). It was so clear. How did I not see this connection earlier. Although, we only perceive the lesson when we are open and clear, there is a lesson in everything we witness!
My lesson this morning wasn't dramatic or traffic stopping but for me, it was nonetheless powerful.
The bird floats in the sky moving forward, backward, side to side, or even hovering.
He doesn't think.
He doesn't doubt.
He is simply guided by his internal compass and his intuition.
Following his knowing.
THAT is how we're supposed to live our lives.
Guided by our internal compass.
The whispers of our intuition.
Taking ego and the mind out it. They have their time and place. But being a guide on our human experience is not one of them.
When we live and move through life through the ego and the mind, that is when we lose our way.
We need to follow the wisdom of the birds.
Follow our internal knowing, that internal compass.
It's that simple.
Sometimes it's hard to stay positive in the midst what feels like so much negativity. I mean, we're bombarded with it on the daily!! In the news, magazines, newspaper, and the water-cooler gossip we hear every day. Besides Buddha, who wouldn't have trouble staying positive?! But we have to. It's an absolute necessity.
What we focus on grows. What we dwell on dwells within us. What we perceive becomes our reality. We have to be super selective and conscious of what we allow ourselves to be witness to as well as what we allow in our minds. Our mind is so powerful! What you allow to dwell or live in there is what your life will be. If you focus on negativity or problems then guess what you will attract more of? Problems and negativity! And when we're so busy focusing on our issues or problems we miss out on the subtle blessings that cross our path.
Would you allow a thief to dwell in your home? Of course not! Well that's no different than allowing negative thoughts and negative self-talk to dwell in your mind. Negativity will rob your life of joy and happiness. Don't let them in! I know it's easier said then done. But actually, only at first. It's only challenging AT FIRST to get out of the habit of thinking negative thoughts and being around negative people. Once you start replacing those thoughts immediately EVERY time, I promise you that will become your new habit. By 'that' I mean positivity. It's contagious! And who wouldn't rather be happy than grumpy and negative? Many years ago while reading, I came across a quote by Dr. Wayne Dyer that read "When you change the way you look at things...the things you look at change". That quote changed my life! It is the absolute truth.
Please try this, for the next 7 days, every time you have a negative thought immediately replace it with a positive one. For example, "My butt looks huge in these jeans"...replace with "I'm so grateful this body gets me to where I need to go". Every time, every day. And then I want to hear from you any change or shift you've noticed in yourself and your life. You can comment below or send me a private email at
Life truly is about perception. There is no "reality" so why not perceive your life as abundantly happy, successful, and blessed?! You have nothing to lose and EVERYTHING to gain.
